Fandom meme
Jan. 3rd, 2010 11:49 pmFollowing in the footsteps of
snickfic and
angearia from the Buffy fandom, but feel free to ask me about any fandom I've dabbled in.
Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Favorite character, favorite moment, unpopular opinion, something about a fic of mine... whatever. Subparts allowed. Wackiness encouraged.

Date: 2010-01-05 01:23 am (UTC)As far as the Buffyverse is concerned:
1. Spike. I saw him as just an entertaining villian/comic-relief/love-disinterest until Blood Ties, Forever and Intervention, when he unexpectedly started bonding with Dawn. It wasn't a ploy to get into Buffy's pants (he did things she'd disapprove of), it didn't get him cash or other perks, and it did nothing for the "Still Evil!" reputation he was clinging to. This was something else, a basic knack for empathy and compassion that 100 years of soulless vampirism couldn't kill. I was smitten.
2. Buffy. She's brave, deals with more crap than she deserves, and still has time to come up with awesome puns and put together coordinating outfits. I was going through some self-doubts when I watched seasons 1 and 2, and drew strength from her character. But at the same time, I struggle to understand some of her less controversial acts (like dating Riley, and feeling guilty about taking care of Angel when he came back from hell. In my world-view, sexism is unforgivable but traumatized exes who escape from hell-dimensions deserve support. Maybe I'm the weird one).
3. Lorne. He came to L.A. from a dimension he didn't feel at home in, and decided to stay because he heard Aretha Franklin sing. And then he managed to assimilate so completely that he can walk among non-green humans and barely get a double-take. The immigrant in me is tickled by his story. The loner in me wants to hang at Caritas every night.
4. Tara. Because among the High Drama of the Scoobies (who often staked first and questioned later, both literally and figuratively) she was usually the voice of calm and reason. By which I mean, she often said the stuff I was yelling at the screen :P
5. Mayor Wilkins. He may be a creepy paternalistic snake-headed hell-god, but I'll bet he hands out free lollipops at all the ritual sacrifices.

I didn't so much notice the first time I watched, but on the rewatch I was appalled that she let her friends beat her down about that - although considering all her late-S2 guilt about Angelus being her fault, I suppose it's not really a surprise. Still, how dare they make her feel bad about caring for someone? Grr.

WIN! I'll just bet he does. *g*
If you're still up for questions... What's your favorite Buffy season?
